Up until the late 1980s, sugar was a large cash crop for Haiti. It became commonplace to see streets merchants parading the streets with barrels full of sugarcane to sell to anyone who wants. It's fairly common to hear, "Kann Kale, Kann Kale. Byen Dous!", which translates to, " Sugarcane, Sugarcane, Super sweet." Being yelled out up and down a street. These merchants peel the cane right in front of your eyes and hand it over to you for as little 5gdes a piece.
